Patty Zampa, RDH, has been promoting dental disease prevention since she began practicing dental hygiene nearly four decades ago. Also an advocate for improved oral care for the elderly, she currently owns her own business, DoorStep Dental, LLC, in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, through which she provides oral care services to dependent elderly adults in their home or residential community. "My role as an oral health caregiver is to aid people in preventing dental disease, which in turn helps to alleviate systemic problems caused by lack of good oral care," she explains.
Throughout her years working as a hygienist, Zampa has noticed how the advent of power toothbrushes has positively affected plaque removal and overall gingival health. "The combination of bristle action and 2-minute timing mechanisms has greatly increased the effectiveness of toothbrushing for a large population of patients," she notes. "Additionally, Waterpik® water flossers are constantly evolving and innovating, allowing for user-friendly oral care products that continue to outperform other methods of interproximal plaque removal."

Zampa touts Waterpik's Sonic-Fusion® Water Flosser/Power Toothbrush-what the company calls the world's first "flossing toothbrush"-as a game-changer. "The Sonic-Fusion is what the industry has needed for many years. It's an impressive device," she asserts. "Using it for the first time was exciting! Having the ability to brush with a high-end power toothbrush and water floss at the same time was a ‘wow' moment for me."
Combining the power of an advanced sonic toothbrush with the effectiveness of a built-in water flosser tip that pulsates from the center of the toothbrush, the versatile Sonic-Fusion, Zampa adds, can be used on either brush mode, floss mode, or both. It also can accommodate a wide variety of patient demographics. "Whether the user is a teenager in orthodontic treatment or an older adult struggling with periodontal disease, this easy-to-use device provides great results for plaque removal and improved oral health," she says. Sonic-Fusion, according to the manufacturer, can be used by patients with braces, implants, crowns, bridges, or periodontal pockets.
"As a dental hygienist for many years, I know that brushing alone is not enough. The Sonic-Fusion makes it much easier for patients to take all the necessary steps to remove plaque with one device. It's so satisfying to see a patient who has struggled with plaque control finally succeed in attaining improved oral health," she attests.
Moreover, Zampa says, Waterpik makes it convenient for dental professionals and patients to understand how the Sonic-Fusion operates. "On the Waterpik website, the user is two taps away via a smartphone from finding an informative and engaging video about how to use it," she remarks. "The video is concise enough for me to play for patients during a hygiene visit. There is also a Waterpik app that can help patients build water flossing into their daily routine."
Zampa notes that the research behind Waterpik water flosser products is comprehensive, showing their effectiveness and safety. "Patients are noticing the Sonic-Fusion in the media and are asking their dental professionals about it," she observes. "My advice to the dental community is to read the research, try the product, and start recommending it to patients. I believe clinicians will see a big difference in their patients' oral care."
