TheraBreath presented results from eight clinical research studies supporting its toothpaste line during the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research 104th General Session, held March 25 to 28, 2026, in San Diego. The poster presentations represent a clinical portfolio for the company’s toothpaste products, with independently conducted studies evaluating gum health, plaque prevention, malodor reduction, whitening, and enamel protection.
According to the company, TheraBreath Healthy Gums Toothpaste, formulated with stannous fluoride (SnF₂), reduced gum bleeding by 70% versus baseline after 12 weeks and demonstrated differences compared with Crest Regular Toothpaste at each measured interval (p<0.0001). After eight weeks, all participants showed at least a 50% improvement in bleeding from baseline. In plaque prevention, the same formulation prevented 65% more plaque buildup than Crest Regular at Day 1 and showed 139% greater effectiveness at the gumline by Day 14, including in hard-to-reach areas.
Malodor outcomes reported that the Healthy Gums Toothpaste reduced oral malodor by a minimum of 70% from baseline across all measured time points over seven days. The company stated that 93% to 95% of users experienced elimination of bad breath at peak time points, compared with 4% to 6% for Crest Regular. Whitening data for TheraBreath Whitening Toothpaste, using a sodium fluoride (NaF) formula, indicated surface stain reduction outcomes that were 50% greater than Crest Regular after two weeks and 65% greater after six weeks, without peroxide.
“IADR is where the dental research community sets the standard for evidence-based care, and we’re proud to contribute to that conversation. These eight studies mark a turning point for TheraBreath™, establishing a clinical foundation for our new toothpaste line that validates what patients have experienced for decades with our rinses, and gives clinicians the data to match,” said Annahita Ghassemi, senior director of global product safety and clinical research at Church & Dwight Co., Inc.
The eight studies presented included a three-month plaque and gingivitis study comparing SnF₂ toothpaste with Crest Regular NaF; a malodor reduction study; a plaque prevention study; a modified PGRM study; an intra-oral appliance study for Healthy Gums; two whitening studies evaluating extrinsic stain removal and intra-oral appliance use; and an intra-oral appliance study focused on sensitivity.
TheraBreath was founded more than 30 years ago by Harold Katz at the California Breath Clinics and became part of Church & Dwight in 2021. The company’s oral care portfolio also includes Waterpik water flossers, ARM & HAMMER toothpaste, and Spinbrush toothbrushes. The IADR is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing dental, oral, and craniofacial research and represents scientists, clinician-scientists, and dental professionals across academic, government, nonprofit, and private-sector settings.
