Dentsply Sirona has announced the launch of Smart View - Detect, an FDA-cleared AI-enabled diagnostic aid designed to identify teeth with periapical radiolucencies (PARLs) in CBCT scans. According to the company, the tool is also CE approved in Europe and is intended to support clinicians in reviewing CBCT data and communicating findings with patients.
Periapical radiolucencies are a common clinical finding, with published research showing that approximately 52% of adults have at least one affected tooth. According to the company, these conditions often require endodontic treatment, making detection and evaluation an important part of clinical workflows.
Smart View - Detect is designed to assist clinicians by highlighting areas within CBCT scans where potential PARLs may be present. According to the company, this approach aims to reduce the risk of overlooked findings and support more efficient review of 3D imaging data.
In an internal multi-reader, multi-case clinical study comparing AI-assisted and unaided CBCT review, clinicians using Smart View - Detect increased tooth-level PARL detection sensitivity by approximately 46% relative to unaided review, without meaningfully increasing false positives.
The tool also includes visualization features intended to support patient communication. According to the company, highlighting areas of interest within CBCT scans can help patients better understand clinical findings and support treatment discussions. The company stated that the tool does not provide a diagnosis.
“Smart View - Detect is designed to support dentists at two important moments—when reviewing complex CBCT data and when explaining findings to patients,” said Wolf-Dieter Perlitz, senior director DS Core at Dentsply Sirona. “By bringing a first of its kind AI-based diagnosis support into DS Core, we continue to advance the value of Connected Dentistry, helping clinicians feel confident in their evaluations, work more efficiently, and communicate more clearly with patients.”
Smart View - Detect is available through DS Core, a cloud-based platform that integrates imaging workflows. According to the company, the platform is intended to reduce operational and clinical complexity in digital dentistry by expanding capabilities and incorporating insights from real-world use.
The feature is compatible with both newly installed and existing Dentsply Sirona CBCT systems, including Orthophos S, Orthophos SL, and Axeos. According to the company, it supports fields of view ranging from 5×5 to 17×11 and can be used with both new and historical CBCT scans transferred from Sidexis 4 into DS Core.
Smart View - Detect will be available beginning May 12, 2026, in the United States and Europe. Access requires a DS Core Standard or Advanced subscription.
