Dentsply Sirona is calling on the dental community to recognize the role of oral health in the care of patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. The call to action coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and focuses on both clinical and workplace efforts to support women in dentistry and healthcare more broadly.
According to the company, research shows that breast cancer therapies — including chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone treatments — can lead to oral complications such as dry mouth (xerostomia), mucositis, glossodynia, and increased risk of infection. In addition to these side effects, chronic periodontal inflammation has been linked to systemic inflammation, which is associated with cancer progression. Oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum have been identified in breast tissue, suggesting a potential microbial connection between oral and breast health.
To support early detection and proactive care, Dentsply Sirona encourages dental professionals to use available technologies, including advanced imaging and intraoral scanners such as the Primescan, to identify and manage oral health issues during cancer treatment.
“Most of us know a woman who has battled breast cancer, and that personal connection reminds us of how critical it is to take broader, meaningful action. Supporting women — whether through clinical care, professional development, or inclusive workplaces — is central to our culture,” said Andrea Frohning, senior vice president and chief human resources officer.
In addition to clinical tools, the company has ongoing programs aimed at supporting women in dentistry. According to Dentsply Sirona, these efforts are part of its global sustainability strategy titled “BEYOND: Taking Action for a Brighter World.” Initiatives include participation in Women in DSO®, which promotes women leaders in Dental Support Organizations, and sponsorship of programs such as First to 50 and She’s Prime, which provide mentorship and leadership development.
The company’s 2024 Sustainability Report outlines achievements including internal gender pay parity and activities designed to expand access to oral health care globally.
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dentsply Sirona is also encouraging symbolic gestures such as wearing pink in dental clinics and workplaces as a way to honor those affected by breast cancer and reinforce a shared commitment to women’s health.
