Forward Science has announced the launch of PerioStōm®, an oral wound dressing intended for use following iatrogenic dental procedures such as scaling and root planing (SRP). The product is FDA-cleared and formulated with chitosan microspheres, a biocompatible polymer with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-biofilm properties.
According to the company, PerioStōm is designed to protect the oral mucosa and support post-procedural healing by delivering a sustained release of chitosan at the treatment site. The formulation is applied using a stainless-steel applicator tip with a diameter matching that of a standard curette, which allows for precise delivery to the base of periodontal pockets.
“PerioStōm will be a game changer in the dental industry. I think you hear it too often about new products, but this time it's true,” says Dr. Brian Pikkula, chief scientific officer at Forward Science. “After our longest R&D timeline concept to launch, the exceptional clinical results speak for themselves. Our team is excited to get PerioStōm to the market.”
According to the company, chitosan’s properties help reduce biofilm formation and inhibit periodontal pathogens such as P. gingivalis, making it a suitable agent for post-SRP care. The company states that the product contributes to reduced patient discomfort and improved treatment outcomes during periodontal healing.
“This is one of those once in a lifetime product,” says Robert Whitman, CEO of Forward Science. “Our team has worked tirelessly to develop this innovative product over the past decade, and we are excited to provide clinicians with a cost-effective solution that meets the highest standards of quality.”
“PerioStōm® represents a pivotal advancement in periodontal care,” says Ellen Myers, executive director of clinical affairs and strategic markets at Forward Science. “This product directly addresses a long-standing clinical need by enhancing standard periodontal therapy, supporting clinicians in delivering consistent, superior clinical outcomes.”
