This continuing education article assesses the current evidence on the link between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and periodontitis, examining their observed similarities and their bacteriologic factors. The clinical relevance of the potential bidirectional relationship is discussed, including the importance of treating periodontitis, which is an inflammatory condition, in patients with CKD, who have a compromised immune system and increased systemic inflammation.

The case report highlighted in this article demonstrates the use of a diagnostic wax-up for creating a periodontal surgical guide for periodontal plastic surgery, which was performed in a patient who required a new gingival contour to be established and increased crown length to achieve the desired esthetic results.
