The current global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has provided dental professionals with a critical opportunity for understanding the process by which infection occurs. Known as the “chain of infection,” this process is a specific cascade of events that must occur in sequence in order for infection to be propagated. The chain of infection consists of the following: infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry, and susceptible host. Importantly, dental professionals can break the chain of infection at any one of these stages, and thus help in reducing the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This article seeks to improve the dental care provider’s understanding of the events involved in the chain of infection as well as to aid clinicians in building effective infection control strategies within the dental setting.
