CE: The Use of Selective Anesthesia in Endodontic Diagnosis
Brooke Blicher, DMD; and Rebekah Lucier Pryles, DMD
This CE article proposes a diagnostic protocol for pain that may or may not be odontogenic. As the authors explain, pain is often difficult to localize, as patients experience radiating pain, not distinguished between the maxillary and mandibular arches. They may also report referral of pain to the ear, neck, and temple. According to the authors, local anesthetics can not only provide immediate pain relief, but they may also serve as a diagnostic aid. The process by which local anesthetics are used in this manner is referred to as “selective anesthesia.”
