In an era where digital dentistry is reshaping patient care, Andrew Johnson, DDS, MDS, CDT, is ahead of the curve. The Fayetteville, Arkansas–based prosthodontist, who was raised in a dental family and immersed in the dental profession from an early age, balances a clinical schedule with roles in teaching, consulting, and product development—all anchored by a passion for making advanced dental tools more usable in everyday practice. He recently integrated the DEXIS Imprevo intraoral scanner into his workflow, transforming clinical evaluation, communication, and treatment outcomes.
“I’ve been a DEXIS intraoral scanner user for a long time, so when I heard about Imprevo, I wanted to see how it compared,” says Johnson, who has been utilizing intraoral scanning since 2010. “Imprevo offered a deeper field of view and faster acquisition speed—both inside the same software platform I was already comfortable with.”
The integration of Imprevo was remarkably smooth, Johnson says. “Implementing the Imprevo was super easy. My assistants were scanning confidently within a day or two. Now, it’s just part of the routine—we don’t really think of it as ‘new technology’ anymore; it’s simply the way we do clinical evaluation and restorative work.”
Johnson notes that the easy-to-use Imprevo scanner has redefined the new patient experience. “Every new patient consultation starts with an intraoral scan. A few years ago, that felt like extra work, but with newer technology like the Imprevo it only takes minutes,” he explains. “Patients can watch as we rotate and zoom in on their digital models, which makes it much easier to talk through treatment options.”
As for image quality, the Imprevo scanner delivers a rare combination of speed and detail. “Imprevo is very fast, but it doesn’t lose detail in the process. The surface capture is crisp, and the resolution holds up well for prosthetic design and surgical guides,” Johnson states, noting that surgical template creation is done in DTX Studio™ Clinic. “Imprevo is simple enough that my team uses it routinely, but I still trust it for my more complex implant cases—not every scanner checks both of those boxes.”
Beyond the chair, Imprevo has had measurable impacts on lab communication and interdisciplinary coordination. “We now send digital files instantly. Our technicians benefit from the speed and clarity, which eliminates guesswork and opens the door to creative digital treatment planning and prosthetic design,” Johnson says.
From a business perspective, the scanner has proven its value. “Scan times have been reduced, which lets us stay on schedule and deliver faster results. And when patients see the technology in action, it boosts their confidence in what we’re recommending.”
Johnson’s advice to colleagues considering Imprevo? “Just start. Don’t feel like you have to master every feature right away. The beauty of Imprevo is that it’s easy to grow into.”
