NLZ Electric Micromotor System: Small Footprint, High Performance, Big on Safety
Compendium features peer-reviewed articles and continuing education opportunities on restorative techniques, clinical insights, and dental innovations, offering essential knowledge for dental professionals.
Ron Kaminer, DDS, considers himself an educator first and foremost. A lecturer both nationally and internationally, he is passionate about teaching clinicians how to implement dental laser technology into their practice and prides himself on being one of the first dentists to utilize hard-tissue dental lasers in his practice. Kaminer has two full-time offices, each with seven operatories, located in Hewlett and Oceanside, New York, where he focuses primarily on minimally invasive and digital dentistry and offers a wide array of indirect restorations.
Kaminer, an experienced general practitioner, is selective about the equipment with which he works. For this reason, he uses NSK's NLZ Electric Micromotor System. According to the manufacturer, the NLZ is compact, has many safety features, and offers flexibility for different installation styles. "I like the NLZ so much, I have three of them in each office," Kaminer attests. "Eventually, I plan to have all the operatories equipped with them, as well."

The NLZ, Kaminer says, offers superior power with less noise and allows greater access. With traditional air-driven handpieces there is potential for enamel microfracturing due to the nature of the traditional technology; with electrics, the rotation is substantially more concentric, and the vibration is minimized, reducing the risk of microfractures and internal damage to the teeth. The NLZ is an efficient device, as the water and air lines within the unit are integrated with the motor, a configuration that maximizes use of space and makes for a lighter and more powerful system. Additionally, the proprietary Contra-Check Function helps ensure safe operation, detecting any abnormalities before use.
"The beauty of the NLZ," Kaminer exclaims, "is the small footprint of the control unit. It fits virtually anywhere, without sacrificing any features."
Kaminer points out that any handpiece will fit into the NLZ, making it easy for clinicians to transition from one to another. The titanium handpiece offered by NSK is lightweight, making it easy for practitioners to hold, and also comes equipped with bright LED lights. "NSK also has a smaller handpiece available that is ideal for clinicians with smaller hands," he adds.
Additional features further distinguish the NLZ from other micromotors, Kaminer affirms. "For practitioners, efficiency and consistent torque are both critical. The NLZ allows revolutions per minute to be adjusted," he explains. In his practice, Kaminer says he dials the RPM down when polishing composites or crowns or finishing a margin, as this allows for maximum precision.
Kaminer reports that the motor is not as noisy as other air-driven units he has used in the past. "There's no ‘chatter,' so the patient experience is better." Also, because of the efficiency of the NLZ, patients are in and out of the chair in a timely fashion. "Less chairtime is beneficial for both the patient and the doctor," he states. "If the doctor can work quicker, it makes for a shorter procedure."
For those interested in purchasing the NLZ, NSK offers a variety of educational programs. "The NSK team trains any doctor interested in how exactly to use the NLZ to the maximum benefit," Kaminer acknowledges.
Aside from the fantastic benefits for performing restorative treatments, the NLZ also comes in a NLZ Endo version, Kaminer notes. The unit, he says, is capable of using any endo files and can be programmed to operate with the proper handpieces in either a rotation mode or reciprocation mode. Along with Auto Reverse and Auto Stop functions and a range of other new features, NLZ Endo enables safer, more efficient endodontic treatments.
Kaminer concludes that for superior performance in a compact size, the NLZ Electric Micromotor System delivers for busy dental practices.
