Depending on your source of research, a generation consists of anywhere from around 25 to 40 years. Literally, it is the period of time in which children are born, grow up, become adults, and have children of their own. More generally speaking, in addition to birth years a generation also may be defined by social factors, economic periods, and even technology development. We often speak in terms of passing on our knowledge to "the next generation." The Silent Generation transferred its wisdom to the Baby Boomers, who in turn enlightened the Gen X'ers, and they then educated the Millennials, who are now schooling members of Gen Z.

Throughout the decades Compendium has maintained a tradition of excellence that has established it as a trusted resource for practitioners. The publication's format has been updated over the years, and, of course, the journal has a stronger online presence today than ever before, but the mission is the same as it was a generation ago: to improve dental health by identifying scientifically sound evidence and presenting it in a well-reasoned and rational context. We will endeavor to continue to provide a forum that allows dental professionals to work together to improve the practice of dentistry.
Sadly, Dr. Cohen passed away last year at age 91. Throughout 2019, Compendium will feature tributes from various organizations in and associated with dentistry and dental medicine honoring Dr. Cohen and highlighting his impact and influence on the dental education profession. Our first installment is from the American Academy of Periodontology (p.6).
At Compendium dental education is our priority. It always has been, and always will be-hopefully, for generations to come.
