Looking Forward
Compendium features peer-reviewed articles and continuing education opportunities on restorative techniques, clinical insights, and dental innovations, offering essential knowledge for dental professionals.
What a whirlwind 2018 has been for Compendium. Our 39th year of publishing peer-reviewed continuing education and clinical content has been full of accomplishments and successes, yet also marked with difficult losses.
Once again, we proudly published our annual dental implant issue in July/August. Spearheaded this year by the esteemed Dr. Donald S. Clem, III, this special issue showcased an array of articles describing critical elements and techniques in the ever-evolving realm of implant therapy. Another highlight of 2018 was our "periodontal plastic surgery" issue in September. It featured the expertise of the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons, a group that for three decades has pioneered the concept of periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery. We also were privileged to publish proceedings from the Southern Implants International Forum held earlier this year in South Africa. In addition, we were pleased to run an informative multipart series on dental care during pregnancy; the third article in the series is featured in this issue.

The year, however, also saw the passing of two very special people who were near and dear to the heart of Compendium. Drs. D. Walter Cohen and Adi A. Garfunkel both were stalwarts of the dental education and publishing industry and instrumental in the success of this venerable journal. In an "In Memoriam" tribute to Dr. Cohen, Compendium's Founding Editor, in our October issue, we highlighted not only his many noble works and achievements but also his passions for teaching, leadership, and unity. I encourage you to read it if you haven't already.
A key figure in the development of Compendium, Dr. Garfunkel served on the publication's Advisory Board for nearly 30 years, lending his skill and talent in oral medicine and dental research. He also served as the journal's publisher in Romania and the Middle East. But more than that, he was a friend of Compendium, someone whose support was palpable through both good and tough times.
While these two pillars are no longer with us physically, they will always be with us in spirit. Thanks to their hard work, vision, and mentorship, Compendium has a bright future. Our pledge is to continue to disseminate evidence-based research, best practices, and emerging technologies and techniques for use in clinical applications.
From all of us at Compendium, have a happy and blessed holiday season! We're looking forward to 2019.
Sincerely,
Louis F. Rose, DDS, MD
