As an accredited member of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics and with his involvement with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Scott Chanin, DMD, FAGD, understands acutely how to meet his elderly patients’ esthetic demands. With more of the elderly population retaining most of their natural teeth—13% of 21 million adults 65 to 74 years of age are completely edentulous compared with 49% of 11 million adults almost 60 years ago—there has been a growing need to focus on highly esthetic restorations in the elderly patient population. A product such as Beautifil® II Gingiva composite is ideal for such esthetic challenges.

Beautifil II Gingiva shades direct resin composites from Shofu Dental Corporation were developed as an addition to the award-winning Beautifil II, a fluoride-releasing, bioactive, nano-hybrid composite in dentin shades. The pink Beautifil II Gingiva was created based on Shofu’s signature Ceramage line, a nano-ceramic indirect composite, and is designed for direct restorations that require optimum esthetics and biocompatibility.
The pink shades of this composite make it truly the ideal esthetic restorative solution—without the need for surgery. Chanin adds, “When it was first released, I started using the product on patients with huge defects, for example, premolar to premolar issues. If you were to just bond them with tooth-colored composite, it would look like they have these huge long teeth. So the great thing about the pink composite is that you can restore the color of the gingival margin of the tooth and actually make it match the anatomy of the gingival tissue, which esthetically makes the restoration significantly better from a conversational view; you can no longer notice the long teeth associated with their recession.”
Beautifil II Gingiva shades resin composite was designed to meet the needs of all ethnicities of your patients and can be blended together or layered to produce custom shades. “The nice thing about the pink composite is it comes in multiple shades—darker, lighter, browner, grayer—and it gives you the ability to match the gingival color and have it blend in perfectly,” adds Chanin.
He emphasizes all the indications for use, especially among the elderly who tend to have recession around old crowns or issues with dentures. “You see that metal color peak out around their aged crowns,” Chanin says. “Pink composite is an excellent way to mask out gray and does well around any kind of metal in the mouth. I have even used this to repair chips in dentures. Elderly patients want the least invasive and quickest fix possible. Instead of realigning the whole piece, you can use this pink composite to mend the denture.”
Beautifil II Gingiva shades are a jack of all trades but specifically intended for the esthetic correction of gingival recession, wedge-shaped defects, exposed cervical areas, splinting, and rebalancing of pink esthetics.
“Patients have high esthetic demands nowadays and want the simplest procedure to procure those types of results. I am able to meet their demand with this simple, one-step composite material that does just that—it’s that easy,” he says.
