One-Step, 7th Generation Adhesive from Shofu Facilitates Predictable Bonding to Both Dentin and Enamel

BeautiBond®, a 7th generation bonding agent from Shofu, is a one-step self-etch system indicated for anterior and posterior restorations. Composed of two functional adhesive monomers—carboxylic acid and phosphonic acid—BeautiBond delivers high shear bond strength to both dentin and enamel, as compared to leading multi-component brands. BeautiBond, says Robert Lowe, DDS, offers clinicians the convenience of a one-step system with the efficacy of those systems that have separate products for etching dentin and enamel, respectively.
Lowe uses BeautiBond in his private practice offices in Charlotte, NC, and Chicago, IL—particularly for Class 2 and 5 restorations where preparation margins are located at or below the level of the gingival tissues. Because the use of total-etch protocols in these clinical situations can lead to bleeding and contamination of the preparation during the adhesive process, it is advantageous to use a product that bonds well to both enamel and dentin without requiring the use of acid etching. “Also, having one product that makes it unnecessary to etch the dentin lessens the potential for operator error and postoperative sensitivity,” he asserts.

Lowe points out that although many clinicians still believe total-etch systems deliver the best bond to both dentin and enamel, due to technique issues—for example, if the etchant is left on dentin too long, if the etchant is not rinsed off properly, or if the dentin is then dried too much—postoperative sensitivity and poor adhesion can occur.
Self-etching systems, he explains, were developed to address the clinical problems identified with total etch, but the quality of their etch to enamel wasn’t as good as that achieved with total etch. “While universal adhesive products in self-etching mode can be optimized by selective etching of enamel, they, too, are not providing an optimal etch to enamel without the use of 37% phosphoric acid,” he adds.
For this reason, Lowe explains, “to get the best of both worlds,” many clinicians adapted a selective-etch technique—that is, they would etch the enamel only, not the dentin—then use a self-etching adhesive on both the dentin and enamel.
“BeautiBond is innovative in being the only one-component system that is showing better adhesion to enamel than other products in the category,” Lowe says. This is because Shofu “combines a unique chemistry into one bottle.” BeautiBond’s durable bond strength is achieved due to its HEMA-free composition and incorporation of a new polymerization catalyst—ie, the phosphonic acid monomer is more stable than phosphoric acid and enhances bonding to tooth enamel, and the carboxylic acid monomer facilitates a strong bond to dentin.
Lowe explains that the strength and durability of BeautiBond has been validated through many in-vitro studies and multi-site clinical trials as well as SEM and TEM observations.1-3 The easy-to-use BeautiBond is appropriate for a wide range of indications in both the anterior and posterior. Its unit-dose delivery system makes its application—a single coat and film thickness of 5 µm—precise and efficient using a protocol that requires less than 30 seconds for a long-lasting, reliable bond.
