Ivoclar Vivadent’s Adhese® Universal with VivaPen®: Effective Delivery for All Etching Methods
Compendium features peer-reviewed articles and continuing education opportunities on restorative techniques, clinical insights, and dental innovations, offering essential knowledge for dental professionals.
According to George Tysowsky, DDS, MPH, Ivoclar Vivadent’s Vice President of Technology, the company’s newly introduced Adhese® Universal single-component, light-cured universal adhesive is compatible with all etching techniques and can be used for the gamut of direct and indirect bonding procedures. The product, he says, offers high bond strength and virtually no postoperative sensitivity.
As with other universal systems, Tysowsky notes, the new adhesive simplifies dentistry and reduces inventory costs. What sets this universal adhesive apart from others is that it is the only universal adhesive available in the revolutionary VivaPen® delivery form, as well as in the traditional bottle delivery form.

Tysowsky describes the benefits of the VivaPen delivery form, which ensures fast direct application of the adhesive. “It is ergonomically designed for the clinician’s comfort and has an integrated fill-level indicator to track the remaining amount of product. Because the adhesive is delivered directly to the preparation using the ergonomically designed VivaPen, there is virtually no waste,” he explains. This, he adds, translates into significantly more applications—up to 190 single-tooth applications—from a single VivaPen as compared to the traditional bottle delivery.
“Clinicians are generally unaware of the amount of adhesive they waste, but they rarely use all that they dispense,” Tysowsky says. “With the VivaPen, they dispense only the amount needed, thus reducing the cost per application.”
Beyond the system’s cost-effectiveness, however, Tysowsky points out that there are advantages strictly due to the consistent freshness of the product dispensed with the Adhese Universal system. Explaining that the highly volatile solvents used in dental adhesives are subject to some degree of evaporation during usage, Tysowsky notes reports linking such evaporation to decreased bond strength. “The VivaPen has a locking mechanism that ensures that the material is consistently fresh, from beginning to end, so it performs better, offering consistently high bond strength with every application while avoiding product waste,” he says.
Tysowsky describes the characteristics of the material itself as technique-tolerant and predictable. It forms a stable, homogenous layer that is not sensitive to any application method. “With Adhese Universal, clinicians can achieve high bond strengths with both enamel and dentin using only a single layer of adhesive, regardless of the etching protocol employed,” he maintains. “Its hydrophilic solvent, which is acetone-free, provides for optimum wetting of the dentin and enamel, which leads to enhanced infiltration and optimum sealing of the dentinal tubules, preventing microleakage and associated postoperative sensitivity.”
Tysowsky notes the many benefits of using a single material for all procedures. “Using a single adhesive—whether the clinician prefers the traditional bottle or the VivaPen—for all bonding and etching procedures enables the clinical team to become proficient in one adhesive for all applications, rather than needing to switch from one to another.” This, he adds, reduces the likelihood of errors.
Recognizing the importance of customer education, Ivoclar Vivadent ensures that clinicians who use the company’s products have a wide variety of training manuals and instruction available to them, Tysowsky notes, adding that the company also maintains an extensive sales and customer service presence. “We employ the best and most knowledgeable field sales and customer service teams in the industry, who are always available to provide our customers support,” he says.
Ivoclar Vivadent is a global leader in innovative materials and processes for quality, esthetic dentistry, Tysowsky concludes. “We maintain a strong commitment to research and development to support our effort to bring customers products and services that will continue to advance their practices and serve the interests of their patients.”
