Ivoclar Vivadent’s bluephase® line of curing lights represents a balanced combination of proven dentistry standards and new technology. Featuring a specially developed polywave® light-emitting diode (LED), bluephase curing lights achieve an optimal broadband range from 385 nm to 515 nm—similar to the spectrum of halogen lights, which serve as the benchmark for many clinicians. As such, bluephase lights are suitable for curing any material currently on the market, according to the company.
Amanda Seay, DDS, of Park West Dentistry in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is a dentist who is a user of Ivoclar Vivadent’s bluephase curing lights. She has found that Ivoclar Vivadent’s newly introduced bluephase style curing light offers her a variety of advantages over curing lights she has used in the past.

“My team and I really enjoy using the bluephase style because it allows us to hold it however is most comfortable for us,” says Seay. Ergonomically designed as a hybrid between gun-shaped and pen-shaped curing lights, the bluephase style gives the operator the opportunity to hold the light in the way that is most comfortable for them, whether that be in a gun-like grip or a pen-like grip.
The bluephase style is also slimmer than many curing lights, making it easy to hold and operate whether the user has large or small hands. “The slim design is great because not only is the light easy to manage for those of us with small hands, but it also can fit into hard-to-reach places in the mouth,” explains Seay. While slim in design, the bluephase style also features a wide tip diameter, offering the user a larger working field, and reducing the need to move the light around the mouth to ensure an efficient cure.
Beyond the comfortable ergonomics of the bluephase style, Seay cites the light’s seamless design as one of its most desirable attributes. “The fact that the casing is all one piece is great because there are no vents or cracks that require extra attention while disinfecting. My team never has to worry that they missed something in the cleaning process,” she says.
The style also features an inductive charging system, which, unlike a contact charging system, does not require exposed metal to touch another piece of exposed metal in order to charge. “When you disinfect curing lights with contact charging systems between patients, the chemicals from the cleaning product will leave residue on the metal pieces, which over time reduces the amount of charge the curing light is able to hold. So, having an inductive charging station is great for increasing the lifespan of the curing light,” describes Seay.
Another of Seay’s favorite features of the bluephase style is that the light has the option of either corded or cordless curing. “It’s great because if you’re using the light and it loses its charge, you can simply plug it in and keep using it like nothing happened,” she says. “You don’t have to find another curing light or let it charge for 15 minutes just to finish up that one patient.”
Seay also notes that the bluephase style is extremely intuitive to use. There are no complicated settings—just two buttons that control the cure time.
Until she started working with the bluephase style, Seay had never had a particular interest in the design and features of curing lights. She explains that certain aspects of this curing light made it a standout at her practice. “I really enjoy the simplicity of the style, as well as its ergonomic design. I also appreciate that not only does it make my restorative procedures more efficient, it offers my team, and myself, more comfort while curing.”
